Nephrology is the branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases. A nephrologist specializes in kidney care, including chronic kidney disease, kidney failure, dialysis, kidney transplants, and conditions that affect kidney function like diabetes and hypertension.

You should see a nephrologist if you have chronic kidney disease, abnormal kidney function tests, persistent protein or blood in your urine, recurrent kidney stones, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or diabetes affecting your kidneys. Early intervention can help slow kidney disease progression.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has five stages based on kidney function (GFR). Stage 1-2 have mild kidney damage, Stage 3 shows moderate decrease in function, Stage 4 is severe decrease, and Stage 5 is kidney failure requiring dialysis or transplant. Dr. Serrano provides care at all stages to help preserve kidney function.

While chronic kidney disease often cannot be completely reversed, its progression can be significantly slowed with proper treatment. Managing underlying conditions like diabetes and hypertension, dietary changes, medications, and lifestyle modifications can help preserve remaining kidney function and delay the need for dialysis.

Dr. Serrano completed his nephrology fellowship at Harvard's Brigham and Women's Hospital and conducted research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He is the first physician in the United States to obtain an ACGME-accredited subspecialty fellowship certificate for interventional nephrology.
