Burn Wound Care: When to Seek Specialist Help

Understanding burn severity, healing expectations, and when a burn wound needs advanced care.

Most minor burns heal on their own, but deeper burns and those that don't heal as expected need specialized wound care. Knowing when to seek expert help can prevent complications and minimize scarring.

Understanding Burn Depth

First Degree (Superficial)

Affects only outer skin layer. Red, painful, no blisters. Heals in 3-5 days. Example: mild sunburn.

Second Degree (Partial Thickness)

Affects epidermis and dermis. Blisters, severe pain, red/white appearance. Heals in 2-3 weeks if superficial, longer if deep.

Third Degree (Full Thickness)

Destroys all skin layers. White, brown, or black appearance. No pain (nerve damage). Requires grafting.
